A Study of the Status of Value-Orientation of Nurses


Abstract
The purpose of this study is to research the status of value-orientations of nurses and to understand of the value system, the structure of thinking, and also to reconfirm of the value in nursing nature.
The samples consisted of 551 nurses working in 7 Associated hosp. C.M.C. in Seoul, Buchun, Bupyeong, Suwon, Taejon.
The research was performed through the questionnaire of the social value-orientations which was designed by Professor In Ja Kim.
The results of the research were analyzed by statistical method.
The major findings and conclusion of the study were as follows:
1. The factor of age has influence on the sub-areas of value-orientation (The sub-areas are such as the trend of public opinion, human relations, popularization, the movement of population) (p<.01).
On the total areas, the group of below 25 years of age showed the most negative responses, and the group of above 36 years of age showed positive responses.
The factor of age has influence on the factors of value-orientation (The factors are behavioral, affective and cognitive) (p<.05).
On the whole factors, the group of above 36 years of age showed the most positive
responses, and the group of below 25 years of age showed the most negative responses.
Specially cognitive factor showed the most positive responses.
2. The factor of marital status doesn¢¥t have influence on the sub-areas and factors of value-orientation.
3. The factor of educational background has influence on the sub-areas of value-orientation(p<.05).
Social trends, human relations showed positive responses at the group of graduated professional college, at the group of other educational background, and showed negative responses at the group of graduated university, at the group of graduated graduate course.
The factor of educational background has influence on the factors of value-orientation (p<. 05).
The group of other educational background showed positive responses, the group of graduated graduate course showed negative responses.
In comparison with the factor showed the most positive responses, behavioral factor showed negative responses (p<. 01).
4. The factor of position has influence on the sub-areas of value-orientation (The position are staff, charge, head nurse, and above supervisor nurse) (p<.05).
On the total areas, the group of above supervisor nurses showed the most positive responses.
Human relations showed positive responses at the group of above supervisor nurses.
The factor of position has influence on the factors of value-orientation (p<.05).
On the affective factor, the group of staff nurses showed the most positive responses, on the other hand, this group showed the most negative responses on the behavioral factor.
On the cognitive anti behavioral factors, the group of charge nurses showed positive responses.
5. The factor of religion doesn¢¥t have influence on the sub-areas and factors of value-orientation.
6. The factor of work part has influence on the sub-areas of value-orientation (p<.05).
Emergency room and Operation room showed generally by far positive responses than any other parts.
On the other hand, intensive care unit showed generally negative responses.
Specially the trend of public opinion and human relations showed strange positive responses at ER and OR.
In comparison with the factors, cognitive and behavioral factor showed the most positive responses at ER and medical ward.
7. The factor of occupational environment by hospitals doesn¢¥t have any influence on the sub-areas and factors of value-orientation.
In the sub-areas, the movement of population showed the most positive responses, and popularization showed negative responses.
8. The factor of clinical career doesn¢¥t have influence on the sub-areas.
On the other hand, the factor of clinical career has influence on the factors (p<.01).
The cognitive factor showed the most positive responses at the group of above 10 years of careers, and the behavioral factor showed the most negative responses at the group of below 2 years of careers.
